What happens if I do not have a bank account or want to make a cash payment?

Many people are currently unbanked and do not have a bank account. According to the FDIC, approximately 5.6 million households in the US were unbanked in 2024. This accounts for almost 4.2 percent of households.  

There are services where tenants can set up a bank account (or prepaid card) to pay their rent which Hemlane accepts. Hemlane recommends either Chime bank's spending account option or Green Dot bank's checking account option.

Where can I get a Chime account?*

1.   You can create a Create a Chime account online here
    
2. Once your account has been created, you can deposit cash into your account at over 90,000+ locations such as Walmart, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General, etc.
   
   
3. After you complete your Chime account set up, please visit our article, "How do I make an online payment as a tenant?" for instructions on how to add your new account into Hemlane and submit your payment(s).

Where can I get a Green Dot bank card?**

1. 1. Create a Green Dot account online here
                                or
   2. Visiting one of their participating retailers where you can also reload your account
      Click here to search all locations where you can reload your Green Dot bank card. The locations are typically found at Walmart, Safeway, 7-Eleven, Dollar General, CVS, etc.
      
      
   3. After you complete your Green Dot set up, please visit our article, "How do I make an online payment as a tenant?" for instructions on how to add your new account into Hemlane and submit your payment(s).     

Note regarding deposits to e-wallet or virtual accounts:
Our payment processor highly suggests using a standard bank account from a financial institution (e.g. checking account from a bank) as virtual bank accounts and e-wallets etc. often have a high failure rate for deposits which can prevent you from receiving money into your account.

If you are using a virtual account or e-wallet, please speak to your property manager about refunding you through a rent credit or alternative payment option such as by mailing you a check. 

Hemlane has no affiliation with Green Dot bank or Chime bank but many tenants use both options successfully to pay their rent and other payments online in Hemlane.
