Many people do not have a traditional bank account. According to the FDIC, approximately 5.6 million households in the US were unbanked in 2024, accounting for nearly 4.2 percent of all households.
There are services where tenants can set up a bank account (or prepaid card) to pay their rent which Hemlane accepts. Hemlane recommends either Chime bank's spending account option or Green Dot bank's checking account option.

A Note on Virtual Accounts and E-Wallets
Our payment processor strongly recommends using a standard checking account from a traditional financial institution. Virtual bank accounts and e-wallets tend to have a higher failure rate for deposits, which can prevent funds from being received into your account successfully.
If you are using a virtual account or e-wallet and experience a deposit issue, please speak with your property manager about alternative options such as a rent credit or a mailed check.
Hemlane has no affiliation with Green Dot or Chime, but many tenants use both successfully to pay rent and other payments within Hemlane.
