The most common type of refund for a current or former tenant is a security deposit return. To receive a deposit or refund as a tenant, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Click into your Payments tab from the left-hand main menu.
Step 2: Click View on the refund you would like to action to open its details.
Step 3: Click the Accept Refund button in the upper right-hand corner.
Step 4: Select the bank account you would like the funds deposited into and click Accept.
Why Do I Need to Select a Bank Account?
Even if you only have one bank account connected in Hemlane, you will still be asked to select a deposit account when accepting a refund. There are a few important reasons for this:
- State deposit laws typically assume a security deposit is returned by check in the mail. Actively selecting an account ensures the transfer is authorized and documented.
- Payment network rules require explicit authorization from the recipient before funds can be deposited electronically.
- Your account may have changed since you moved in. Tenants sometimes close or change bank accounts after moving out, so confirming the deposit account ensures the funds go to the right place.
