This article provides guidance on using Codebox lockboxes for self-guided tours, including ownership details and best practices to ensure a smooth tenant placement experience.
Who Owns the Lockbox?
The owner who submits a leasing service request will be the owner and operator of the lockbox. The lockbox is included as a non-refundable $100 purchase.
Hemlane does not own or control these lockboxes. We assist by coordinating the lockbox setup and covering the Codebox activation fees as part of your Tenant Placement request. However, our team cannot assist with the lockbox once it arrives. All troubleshooting, battery replacement, and general maintenance can be handled by the owner or their representative.
Can I Rely 100% on These Lockboxes?
We strongly recommend keeping a backup set of keys locally. If you are not local to the property, we highly suggest storing a separate set of keys in a non-digital lockbox. As with any digital lockbox, Codeboxes can malfunction, so having a second set of keys is always a good idea.
You can share backup access information with our team by navigating to Maintenance and Repair, clicking Instructions, and entering the location and lockbox code there. We will not share this information with tenants unless it is an emergency.
How Many Keys Can Be Placed in a Codebox Lockbox?
If you purchase your Codebox through Hemlane, Codebox ships you a Senior lockbox, which is the larger version and holds up to 2 to 4 keys including key rings.
Tip: Do not place more than 2 to 4 keys in the lockbox. Overfilling may cause the lockbox to become jammed and inoperable, which would require a locksmith to open.
Reminder: Make sure the keys stored in the lockbox unlock all necessary entry points, including the door handle lock, deadbolt, and any additional locks such as screen doors or secondary doors.
Is the Lockbox WiFi-Enabled?
No. Codebox lockboxes are Bluetooth-enabled only and do not require a WiFi or cellular connection to operate.
What Is the Battery Life of These Lockboxes?
Codebox lockboxes have an expected battery life of 9 months. Weather and other external factors may affect this, so we recommend replacing the battery before each tenant turnover to ensure the lockbox remains accessible.
What Are the Power Requirements for These Lockboxes?
Codebox lockboxes require a 9V alkaline or lithium battery with a minimum of 1200 mAh. Here are some recommended options:
- X2 Power 9V Lithium Battery (recommended by Codebox)
- Batteriol 9V Lithium Battery 1200 mAh (available at Walmart)
- Tenergy 9V Lithium Battery, 1200 mAh (available at Walmart)
Tip: If none of the above are available, you can use an Energizer 9V Lithium Battery. Please note that this battery has a maximum capacity of 750 mAh. If used, check the lockbox consistently to verify it is still functioning properly.
